그러나 순간 믿을 수 없는 일이 일어났다. 어미소가 태연히 젖을 물린 것이다.

주사를 맞은 어미소는 시간이 지나면서 다리를 부르르 떨기 시작했고,

새끼에게 젖을 물린 채 쓰러지지 않고 버텨냈다. 2~3분을 그렇게 젖을 먹이던 어미소는

 새끼가 젖을 떼자 결국 그 자리에서 숨을 거뒀다.

영문을 모르는 송아지만이 어미소 곁을 계속 맴돌았다.

결국엔 송아지도 살처분 돼 어미소 곁에 나란히 묻혔다.

죽음의 문턱에서까지 계속된 어미소의 모정(母情)에,

당시 현장에 있던 방역 요원들은 모두 눈시울을 붉힐 수밖에 없었다
